Located just west of Wakefield and north west of our store in Horbury, the former 19th century spa town of Ossett is a well known area of West Yorkshire and features in the Doomsday book dating back to 1086. During the industrial revolution, Ossett played an important role in the local area and the 1960s saw the town have one of the most industrious coal pits of West Yorkshire.
Thanks to its geographic location, as reported in Wikipedia, ‘author and local resident Stan Barstow said that Ossett and Horbury were the “border country” where the north-west of the coalfield merged with the south-east of the wool towns.’ The town to this day still has an everlasting tradition with woollen mill practices and houses four mills in the town and outskirts to this day.
Ossett has great infrastructure links to the rest of Yorkshire, partly in thanks to the Romans who carved out road networks into large towns like Halifax and Wakefield. The M1 motorway runs past the town whilst there is a planning application in place to reinstate a railway line into the town after the current line closed in the mid 90s.
