Famed for being a former coal-mining town, Barnsley is a town that we have catered many events over the years and even have personal connections to the town that means that not only do we know, Barnsley but that we understand a community that is built on years of connections to the town and the local region.
Where is Barnsley?
Based in South East Yorkshire, only a short drive from Sheffield and Doncaster, known for Toby Tyke the 7ft Bulldog football mascot, Barnsley has developed a reputation as a small town that packs a punch when it comes to what’s available in and around the local area, especially in lifestyle pursuits and entertainment.
Take a town that has a history of coal, glassmaking and mining and you have a town that has more heritage than some major modern cities. This is a town that a community has built, and one that continues to care about it, no matter the day, week, month or year.
Surrounded by the Peak District and ancient villages and historic parkland, Barnsley has some excellent places to visit for those wanting to relax and get back to nature. From museums to stately homes, art galleries and pre-roman ruins, there is a wealth of things to choose from when it comes to seeing and living in Barnsley.
A town of independents
Packed full of independent shops, high street stores and a fantastic market, the envy of many other Yorkshire towns, you can find many a hidden gem in the farm shops stocked with local produce and hidden hamlets along the way.
Of course, a great market means that the foodie in the family has a lot to choose from, with regulars coming back to farm shops and market stalls as there is a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, as with most good Yorkshire towns and cities.
Things to see and do
There are a few choice things to see and do around the city, with some fantastic hidden gems that will keep you entertained for hours on end. If you wanted to watch a great theatre performance, then the Lamproom Theatre is the place to be. With a variety of acts past and present enjoying the stage, it has also been one of the few English theatres that the late great, Charlie Chaplin performed on.
Visitors to the city can also choose to go to a fine art gallery such as the Cooper Gallery or take a step back to the majestic Cannon Hall Museum and see what historic Barnsley and surrounding areas were like. If you wanted to see what the new Barnsley experience is like, then check out the New Experience Barnsley Museum which has been curated by the people of Barnsley to show what is new to the centre and the surrounding areas.
If however, you wanted to venture out into new pastures just on the outskirts of the town, then why not spend a quiet yet relaxing afternoon at Monk Bretton Priory or check out the extraordinary Yorkshire Sculpture Park situated at Wentworth castle or cycle along the Trans Pennine Trail which goes all the way to Hull.
